United Kingdom Mathematics Trust – UKMT

Five of our Year 10 students participated in a webinar organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust – UKMT.

The webinar was led by Eszter Backhausz, who is a teacher and tutor and has been a UKMT volunteer for several years. The webinar was in two parts, the first on Thursday 2nd July and the second on Thursday 9th July. The webinar was aimed at Year 10, KS3, Year 11 and up.

The following girls participated: Areeb, Sophia, Thairah, Ruqayyah and Amelia.

The maths webinar that we attended was very informative and gave me an insight on a different type of maths. One topic that was discussed is the 4 and 6 colour theorem. The teacher on the Webinar also discussed and explained Planar graphs. I found it a very interesting experience as it showed me what I could learn about when I pursue maths in the future.

Ruqayyah

On the 2nd of July, the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) hosted a Webinar meeting which explained the topic “Graph Colouring.” In graph theory, graph colouring is a labelling of “colours” to a graph subject to certain constraints. In this case, the certain restrictions were colouring in graphs in a way that two corresponding colours would not touch. I really enjoyed this course because it helped me understand the proof and theory behind these questions, which I found tricky at first. It was quite interactive as they set multiple polls about the four and six colour theorems to take part in and answer questions regarding this topic. Overall, it was an extremely fun experience and I really enjoyed taking part.

Our Year 7 and 8 students took part in UKMT Junior Challenge on 26th June 2020.

It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.

We eagerly await their results!
