SECONDARY SCHOOL NEWS SUMMER 2010

SECONDARY SCHOOL

YEAR 9 ELECTIONS

As soon as it became clear that a General Election was imminent, Year 9 leapt into action. Divided (democratically – names in a hat!) into three groups representing the three major parties, Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat, the groups quickly became immersed in the politics of their Parties. They all worked incredibly hard – researching history, policies and ideology, canvassing, creating posters and using school assemblies to persuade students and staff to vote for them. It was an exciting few weeks and every Year 9 student has become a keen student of the political machine.

Every student (and teacher!) in the school had a vote and we registered with Google School Election to participate in their collations of results gathered from the many schools in the country running mock elections.

At Park School for Girls the Conservative Party won the election!

LAMDA External Examinations

Once again, the external Speech and Drama results from the London Academy of Dramatic Art (LAMDA) were excellent with a 100% pass rate; 5 achieved a Pass, 18 a Merit and 6 a Distinction. The top mark of 80% was awarded to Sanjalee Sharma. Very well done to all!

BUST-A-RHYME

Earlier this year, the girls in the Senior School took part in the ‘Bust-a-Rhyme’ competition. Given a comprehensive list of themes and ideas, each student was asked to produce a poem, in any style, for the best to be published in an anthology. We were proud and pleased to see that TWENTY NINE Park School girls have poems in this beautifully produced book.

We have a copy of the book in the school library and copies can be purchase online at www.youngwriters.co.uk

THOSE WICKED STUDENTS!!

A number of students can now be labelled truly wicked! This is not due to any mischief but rather because they can say that they have seen the West End show of the same name! On 1st July members of the choir attended a summer trip to see Wicked, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The girls were very impressed by the excellent performance and witty script, which puts the story of The Wizard Of Oz in a completely new light. This was a highly enriching experience, watching what many regard as the best musical currently running in the West End.

ART DEPARTMENT

The Ilford Business Improvement Group have been promoting the concept of ‘A Clean Ilford’ in recent months.

As part of their campaign, schools were invited to come up with designs for chewing gum boards. It is hoped that shoppers will use these boards to dispose of their gum, instead of dropping it on the pavement. Cleaning up gum costs thousands of pounds a year. Under the guidance of Mrs Pretty, Head of Art, all of Year 9 entered the competition.

At the award ceremony at the end of June Shivani Patel and Mahham Mukhtar were presented with prizes as runners up in the competition. We hope to see their designs covered in chewing gum in Ilford in the near future!

Art Trip – National Portrait Gallery and Fourth Plinth

On Wednesday 7th July 2010 Year Nine visited The National Portrait Gallery. We travelled via train and tube to Leicester Square where a short walk brought us to The National Portrait Gallery. When we arrived we first attended a lecture on Image and Identity. Alison, who has worked at the gallery for 17 years, talked to us about various art works in the collection focusing on facial features and symbols. After the lecture we went round the gallery and we saw some of the paintings which were discussed in the lecture. We started at the top floor with the Tudors and finished on the bottom floor with Contemporary Art, including a head made of blood which actually looked like it was made of velvet.

After we had looked at the paintings we sat and ate our lunch in Trafalgar
Square. This gave us the opportunity to view the current installation on the 4th plinth: Boat in a Bottle designed by Yinka Shonibare MBE. Then we had a photo opportunity and showed our image and identity as teenagers.

After lunch we went to see the BP Portrait Awards where we saw a variety of portraits and we sketched our favourite painting. We were all amazed at the photo realism of the paintings and wondered if we would ever be that good.

VICTORIA AND ALBERT

On Thursday 7th July 2010 year eight visited the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington. We travelled by bus, which for some was their first-ever bus ride, and then tube.

The purpose of our trip was to see the Quilt Exhibition 1700-2010. As the group had been studying Matisse and learning so much about colour and shape it was the more contemporary quilts which took their attention. We loved learning about all the different quilt styles, names and stories behind them. It was an incredible opportunity to see quilts which usually are not shown as artworks or even on display in such a context. It was an inspirational day out which ended with a walking tour of the paintings and textiles from the V&A collection and a trip to the shop to buy souvenirs.

On the return to school all the students agreed it was worth going and hope to be able to go back with their families and explore even more of the collection one day soon.

Visiting the Tate Modern

On Tuesday 18th May 2010 we, the two year 10 GCSE Art groups were lucky enough to visit the Tate Modern in London.  This was the very first visit for all of us so before visiting we did a small amount of research on the building and then discussed it briefly before leaving. We knew it had been a power station so the expectation was the building would be very large and indeed it was.

The main displays were set out on three different levels, with each one having two wings and on the ground floor was the turbine hall which is the largest gallery space in the world.

We were here to see Poetry and Dream as we are studying Surrealism. Everything in this wing was about Surrealism, including works from the original movement and also works done in response to this. We had a tour through the entire wing and then made sketches and took notes of works we liked. The Tate was doing a trail allowing photographs to be taken so we made the most of this too.

We had lunch outside on the grass as the weather was nice and then we split into pairs and were able to visit any other parts of the gallery we were interested in.

After visiting the Tate Modern, I came away feeling very inspired and I am confident that the trip has been beneficial for the current work we are doing, by developing our understanding of Surrealism and also as a future resource as we discovered so many art movements
and artists, some of which we had never heard of before.

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT

Since 1981 The Royal Institution has been running secondary mathematics master classes at their headquarters in London.

Two of our students were invited to take part this year.

Maryam Khankhara was invited as the student who was ‘Best in School’ in the Maths Challenge that our student compete in every year. She was joined by Maisha Qureshi who was nominated by her teacher as an enthusiastic mathematician.
Maryam and Maisha were entertained by several lectures one was about mathematics in 3005. They learned how to find the correct temperature for fish tanks, and why birds fly in flocks.

They did have to exercise their brains a little more at lunchtime, when they were presented with a mathematical challenge.

They thoroughly enjoyed the day, and were particularly pleased to meet so many budding mathematicians from other schools.
